The Cabinet des Monnaies et Médailles de Marseille has a rich cultural and scientific collection of coins and medals. The quality and rareness of many objects makes it one of the most important in France.
Founded during the French Revolution, the numismatic cabinet collects in antiquities and medieval coins and medals, and has got special collections, donated by collectors.
In 1715 the margrave Karl-Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach had founded his new city of residence. His planned baroque city with the castle in the centre is an example of a perfect image of absolutist power. The supremacy of the dynasty of Baden ended with the defeat of the German empire in the First World War. Grand duke Friedrich II abdicated on November 22, 1918, and left his residence.

The Coin Cabinet of the German National Museum could not build upon an old royal collection, like most important coin collections did. It only started collecting after the foundation of the museum in 1852. In the beginning the collection developed in a rather disorderly way, and there was a limit to the eras from which coins were collected. Around 1870 the Cabinet started collecting contemporary coins and medals. However, the regional boundary was kept, like for all collections in the museum.

The coin collection of the history museum consists of coins of the city of Frankfurt, medals from persons and events from Frankfurt, German coins, ancient coins (Greek and Roman), banknotes, seal stamps and coin scales and balances.
